25th Quarter Launch Marks Halfway Point for Popular 50 State Quarters® Program

Murfreesboro, Arkansas – United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore joined Governor Mike Huckabee and First Lady Janet Huckabee today at Crater of Diamonds State Park to launch the new Arkansas State quarter, celebrating the environmental treasures of the “Natural State.” The Arkansas State quarter also marks a unique and important milestone – the halfway point in the 50 State Quarters® Program.

“The sweeping natural beauty of Arkansas clearly and proudly appears on this coin,” said Director Fore. “It is the first United States circulating coin to feature images of rice and a diamond.”

The Arkansas quarter design bears the image of a diamond, rice stalks and a mallard gracefully flying above a lake. The Murfreesboro High School Band provided trumpet fanfare as the new quarter was placed on the large United States map that represents the program. Miss Arkansas 2003 Whitney Kirk and United States Mint mascot “Peter the Mint Eagle” were also on hand as children in the audience received shiny new Arkansas quarters.

“This promises to be a historic day in our State’s history, and we want to mark it with a special event that allows us to celebrate Arkansas’ heritage,” said Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. “I can think of no place better to do that than the Crater of Diamonds, the only public diamond mine in North America. Our quarter design features the things that make Arkansas unique, and the diamond mine is certainly one of those unique attractions.”

The Arkansas quarter dollar coin is the fifth and final quarter of 2003. Arkansas was admitted into the Union on June 15, 1836. The land was acquired through the Louisiana Purchase and became the Arkansas Territory before gaining statehood.

Arkansas’ Crater of Diamonds State Park is the only diamond mine in the United States that is open to the public. Visitors can search the crater for precious gems, including, of course, diamonds. The state also has an abundance of clear streams and rivers, boasts more than 600,000 acres of natural lakes, and is renowned for its outstanding waterfowl hunting. Arkansas is also the nation’s leading producer of rice. January 2001, Governor Huckabee announced the Arkansas Quarter Challenge as a statewide competition. There were 9,320 entries. After several rounds of elimination, the Governor forwarded three concepts to the United States Mint, including Arkansas’ natural resources and the State Capitol building. The United States Mint returned four candidate designs to the Governor based on the concepts he had submitted. He chose the natural resources design.

The United States Mint’s collectible five-coin proof sets featuring all five state quarters for 2003 and other popular 50 State Quarters products are available on the United States Mint’s website, www.usmint.gov, and by calling 1-800-USA-MINT.

Launched in 1999, the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters Program is a 10-year initiative that honors each of the states in the order they were admitted into the Union. Each quarter is produced for about 10 weeks and will never be produced again. Surveys show that more than 130 million adults collect the quarters.

Created by Congress in 1792, the United States Mint is the manufacturer of legal tender coinage for the United States. In FY 2002, the United States Mint manufactured approximately 15 billion coins and generated revenue of $1.8 billion. For more information, please visit www.usmint.gov. WASHINGTON — The United States Mint announced today that state quarters honoring Arkansas, the fifth coin in the 50 State Quarters® Program to be released in 2003, will go on sale beginning October 20, 2003, at 12:00 noon (Eastern Time), and will be available for purchase during the 10-week release period. The Arkansas quarter is the final quarter of 2003, and the 25th in the 50 State Quarters® Program. Arkansas was admitted into the Union on June 15, 1836. Arkansas was acquired through the Louisiana Purchase and later became the Arkansas Territory before gaining statehood. The Arkansas quarter design bears the image of rice stalks, a diamond and a mallard gracefully flying above a lake, celebrating the outstanding resources of the “Natural State.”

Each coin roll in the two-roll set is wrapped in a specially-designed United States Mint paper coin wrap that prominently displays the 50 State Quarters Program logo, a “P” or “D” representing the roll’s mint of origin, “AR” designating the State of Arkansas, and “$10” representing its dollar value. Each bag is marked with the mint of origin and the dollar value of its contents “$25” or “$250.” Two-roll sets will sell for $32.00, bags of 100 coins for $35.50, and bags of 1,000 coins for $300. Catalog to Include Map of Lewis and Clark’s Historic Route Through Louisiana Territory

WASHINGTON – The United States Mint today announced that the 2003 United States Mint Annual Catalog, featuring the First Flight Centennial Commemorative Coins and the 2003 American Eagle Proof Platinum Coins, will be available by mail and online beginning September 29, 2003.

As a special premium for United States Mint customers, this year’s catalog includes a map developed for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commemoration. This colorful map is an excellent historical reference, highlighting the priceless natural treasures along the trail and our precious Native American heritage.

“This year’s catalog displays the unequaled quality of United States Mint coins. The Platinum Proof American Eagle ranks among the most beautiful coins ever produced,” said United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore. “And the First Flight Commemoratives are so detailed, you can almost hear the engine of Orville and Wilbur Wright’s plane.”

The 2003 American Eagle Platinum Proof new reverse design marks the first time in history that both the bald eagle and our Nation’s flag have appeared together on a United States coin. The coin’s patriotic reverse design features the bald eagle, perched vigilantly on a Rocky Mountain pine branch and superimposed over Old Glory – two of our Nation’s most enduring symbols. The coin’s obverse design features a striking rendition of Lady Liberty, with a serene gaze that evokes a spirit of freedom and hope. Her torch, valiantly held aloft, appears to light up her face and crown.

The First Flight Centennial Commemorative Coins, the only commemorative coin program for 2003, celebrates the first manned, controlled-powered flight of a heavier-than-air machine, on December 17, 1903. The program features clad, silver and gold coins, ranging in price from $10.75 for the uncirculated clad commemorative half dollar to $375 for the proof gold ten dollar coin. The First Flight Centennial Foundation is authorized to receive a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these limited-edition coins to aid in the restoration, refurbishment and maintenance of the Wright Monument and Visitor Center in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.

This year’s catalog also features the popular National Wildlife Refuge System Centennial Medal Series and many other medals of the United States Mint, including those honoring President George W. Bush, President Thomas Jefferson, John Wayne, President Ronald Reagan and former First Lady Nancy Reagan, and the Navajo Code Talkers. Deluxe presentation cases also are available.

WASHINGTON – The United States Mint today announced that the limited edition of 75,000 Missouri Official First Day Coin Covers will be available online at www.usmint.gov beginning 12:00 noon (Eastern Time) on September 8, 2003.

Priced at $19.95, the Missouri Official First Day Coin Cover, which is also available through the United States Mint’s Subscription Program, features two Missouri quarter-dollars – one each bearing a Philadelphia and Denver mint mark – from July 14, 2003, the first day of mintage, on a handsome display card with a 37-cent United States Flag postage stamp.

The postmark of “August 4, 2003, Saint Louis Station, Saint Louis, Missouri, 63155” indicates the day the quarter-dollars were released to the Federal Reserve Bank and to the public. The Missouri quarter-dollar is the 24th in the United States Mint’s 50 State Quartersâ Program, which honors the states in the order that they ratified the U.S. Constitution or were admitted into the Union. Five state designs will be issued each year through 2008 at approximately 10-week intervals.

Missouri became the 24th state to be admitted into the Union on August 10, 1821, as a part of the Missouri Compromise. The Missouri quarter-dollar depicts Lewis and Clark’s historic return to St. Louis down the Missouri River, with the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (Gateway Arch) in the background. The quarter is inscribed “Corps of Discovery 1804-2004.”

Customers can purchase the Missouri Official First Day Coin Covers online through the United States Mint’s secure website at www.usmint.gov, or by calling toll-free 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468) 8:00 a.m. to midnight (E.D.T.), seven days a week. SEDALIA, MISSOURI – As the Lewis and Clark Fife and Drum Corp played, United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore, Missouri Governor Bob Holden and First Lady Lori Hauser Holden officially launched the new Missouri state quarter at the State Fair in Sedalia today. The United States Mint’s mascot, Peter the Mint Eagle, was on hand as children in the crowd received shiny new Missouri quarter-dollars.

Dr. Robert Archibald, President of the National Council of the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial and co-Chairman of the Missouri Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Commission, acted as Master of Ceremonies. The new quarter is the first circulating coin to depict Lewis and Clark’s historic expedition nearly 200 years ago, depicting the explorers’ return to Saint Louis down the Missouri River. The Jefferson National Expansion Memorial (the Gateway Arch) is illustrated in the background, with the inscription “Corps of Discovery 1804-2004.”

The Show Me state’s launch celebration marks the first time in the 50 State Quarters® Program that the official ceremony has coincided with a state’s birthday – its day of statehood. Missouri became the 24th state to be admitted into the Union on August 10, 1821, as part of the Missouri Compromise.

“The Missouri quarter depicts the rich history and the spirit of adventure at the heart of this great state and our Nation,” said United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore. “We have a special affinity for Missouri at the Mint, since Nellie Tayloe Ross, born near St. Joseph, was the first woman to serve as Director of the Mint, from 1933 to 1953.”

In February 2001, Governor Bob Holden announced the selection of the Missouri Commemorative Quarter Design Committee and requested statewide design submissions. During the month of March, the state received more than 3,000 concept submissions. The Missouri Commemorative Quarter Design Committee, composed of a team of experts, selected twelve finalists. The twelve finalists were presented to the public, who chose five concepts to forward to the United States Mint. The concepts included representations of the Nation’s westward expansion, a riverboat, the Pony Express, and Lewis and Clark’s expedition. From the candidate designs that the United States Mint returned to Governor Holden, the Lewis and Clark design, “Corps of Discovery 1804-2004″, was chosen by an online vote.

The 8,000-mile journey of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark westward and back, which some claim was the greatest U.S. military expedition ever, began in St. Charles, Missouri — just 20 miles west of St. Louis — in 1804 and ended when they returned to St. Louis, Missouri in 1806. The United States Mint officially released the Missouri quarter to the Federal Reserve Bank on August 4, 2003.

The United States Mint’s collectible five-coin proof sets featuring all five state quarters for 2003 and other popular 50 State Quarters products are available on the Mint’s website, www.usmint.gov, and by calling 1-800-USA-MINT.

First U.S. Circulating Coin to Feature a Lighthouse

New Harbor, Maine – The new Maine quarter promises to light up America’s summer. Maine’s entry in the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters® Program is the first U.S. circulating coin to feature one of our Nation’s historic lighthouses.

United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore and Maine Governor John Baldacci formally launched the coin in a ceremony today before the dramatic Pemaquid Point Light, strikingly illustrated on the quarter. The Maine State commemorative quarter-dollar is the 23rd in the 50 State Quarters Program. It is the last of the New England quarters to be minted. Americans will start seeing this quarter in their pockets within weeks.

“As Americans enjoy their summer vacations, they will be buying ice cream cones with quarters featuring one of the picturesque lighthouses they love to visit,” said Director Fore.

“It is a great pleasure to kick-off the summer season by unveiling the new Maine State Quarter,” said Governor Baldacci. “Pemaquid Point is a spectacular setting for this historic event and our state quarter depicts a scene that demonstrates part of what makes Maine such a special place. I know this new quarter will enhance interest in our state, and serve an education role for children as part of the United States Mint’s Quarter Program.”

Additional participants in the ceremony included Maine State Treasurer Dale McCormick; Tom Wilcox, Executive Director of the Maine Maritime Museum; Tim Harrison, President of the American Lighthouse Foundation; Captain Kip Files of the schooner Victory Chimes; and Maine humorist Tim Sample.

The Maine quarter is the third to be released in 2003. Coins in the 50 State Quarters Program are released in the order the states were admitted into the Union. Maine became the 23rd state to be admitted into the Union on March 15, 1820.

The Maine quarter design also features the image of a schooner resembling Victory Chimes, the last three-masted schooner of the Windjammer Fleet. Victory Chimes has become synonymous with Maine windjamming.

Pemaquid Point Light is located in New Harbor, and marks the entrance to Muscongus Bay and Johns Bay. Since the beginning of ship activity in the area, a shoal created hazardous navigation conditions, causing many shipwrecks. As maritime trade increased in the area, so did the need for a lighthouse. In 1826, Congress appropriated funds to build a lighthouse at Pemaquid Point. The original building was replaced in 1835. The light is still a beacon for ships and remains one of Maine’s most popular tourist attractions.

In March 2001, former Governor Angus King established the Commission on the Maine State Quarter Design. The Pemaquid Point Light design was chosen by popular vote, with more than 100,000 Maine residents participating.

Governor Baldacci has been supportive of the 50 State Quarters Program and visited the United States Mint in Philadelphia, along with Congressman Michael Michaud, on May 12, 2003, when the United States Mint honored the Pine Tree State with Maine Quarter Day. The United States Mint officially released the Maine quarter to the Federal Reserve Bank on June 2, 2003.

The United States Mint’s collectible five-coin proof sets featuring all five state quarters for 2003 and other popular 50 State Quarters products are available on the United States Mint’s website, www.usmint.gov, and by calling 1-800-USA-MINT.

Created by Congress in 1792, the United States Mint is the manufacturer of legal tender coinage for the United States.
