WASHINGTON - The United States Mint announced today that it will begin selling the latest addition to it product line – the limited-edition The 50 State Quarters® & Euro Coin Collection – by phone, mail and online at www.USMINT.gov on June 12, 2002, at noon (EST).

“2002 will long be remembered as the year the euros replaced twelve sovereign European nation’s national currencies,” said United States Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore. “Unfortunately, many here in the United States have never seen these beautiful new euro coins –until now. Through The 50 State Quarters® & Euro Coin Collection, Americans will be able to see and learn about the latest additions to the world’s numismatic family in one educational and comprehensive set.”

Each of The 50 State Quarters® & Euro Coin Collection set will feature the five 50 State Quarters scheduled for release in 2002 – Tennessee, Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi – in uncirculated condition with a Denver mint mark, together with 12 one-euro coins – one from each of the original participating European Union nations – Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. The euros are of uncirculated quality and the dates may vary.

This new collection will sell for $49.95. Production is limited to 100,000 sets. Due to expected high demand, there will be a limit of 20 sets per order.

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Mint today announced that the limited edition of 75,000 Tennessee Official First Day Coin Covers will be available online at www.USMINT.gov beginning 12:00 noon Eastern Time on February 11, 2002. The Tennessee Official First Day Coin Cover features two Tennessee quarters from the first day of mintage – December 10, 2001.

Priced at $19.95, the Tennessee Official First Day Coin Cover includes quarters from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities on a handsome display card with the 34-cent United We Stand postage stamp.

The postmark of “January 2, 2002, Memphis, Tennessee” marks the day Tennessee quarters were released to the Federal Reserve Bank and the public - certifying this limited edition and honoring America’s “Volunteer State.” The Tennessee design features a trumpet, a fiddle, a guitar, and a musical score, symbolizing the State’s many contributions to American music, with the inscription “Musical Heritage” and three stars for each geographical region of the state. The fiddle represents the Appalachian music of East Tennessee, the guitar the country music of Nashville in Central Tennessee, and the trumpet the blues of West Tennessee.

The Tennessee quarter is the 16th in the 50 State Quarters Program that honors each of the states in the order they entered the union. Five state designs will be issued each year through 2008 at approximately 10-week intervals.

Volunteer State Honored with New State Quarter

Nashville, Tennessee - Governor Don Sundquist today joined U.S. Mint Director Henrietta Holsman Fore and Treasurer of the United States Rosario Marin at the Country Music Hall of Fame to unveil the 16th state quarter in the 50 State Quarters® Program, honoring the musical heritage of the “Volunteer State.”

Tennessee became the 16th state to be admitted to the Union on June 1, 1796. The new coin features a trumpet, a fiddle, a guitar, and several musical notes, symbolizing the State’s many contributions to American music, with the inscription “Musical Heritage.” Similarly, Tennessee’s state flag has three stars representing each region of the State.

“From folk to blues to country and western, Tennessee musicians have made enduring contributions to our nation’s musical heritage,” said Fore. “It is fitting that the Tennessee quarter honors the instruments, people and traditions that have so enriched American culture.” She added that Tennesseans should be proud of this coin and the place it now takes as the 16th state in the 50 State Quarters Program.

Governor Sundquist selected the final design after the Tennessee Coin Commission received and reviewed more than 1,000 design suggestions from across the state. The final design, which was approved by the Secretary of the Treasury, features musical instruments representing the State’s three major musical genres — a fiddle, representing the Appalachian music of East Tennessee; a guitar, symbolizing the country music of Nashville in Central Tennessee; and a trumpet, reflecting the blues of West Tennessee for which Memphis is renowned. The winning design was submitted by Shawn Stookey, a teacher at Lakeview Elementary in New Johnsonville, Tenn.

“This is an exciting time for Tennessee as we begin the New Year by celebrating our State’s rich history and showcasing it to the world through this distinctive quarter,” said Governor Sundquist. “Our quarter reflects our State’s diverse musical heritage that thrives in Tennessee’s three grand divisions.”

“With the trying times our nation has recently endured,” said U.S. Treasurer Marin, “the Volunteer State embodies the American spirit of serving one’s country and helping one’s neighbor. With that in mind, I am especially proud to be in the great State of Tennessee to honor this new state quarter.”

Hundreds of Tennesseans attended the launch ceremony held in the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Ford Motor Company Theatre. The Hillsboro High School Sophisticats kicked off the event, which included remarks from Gov. Sundquist, Mint Director Fore, U.S. Treasurer Marin and performances by singers Isaac Hayes, Ricky Skaggs, Marty Stuart and Ruby Wilson. Following the ceremony, an open house was held at the State Capitol from 1- 3 p.m.

The release of the Tennessee quarter marked the end of production of the Kentucky quarter, released in October 2001. The quarters are manufactured at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, which produce all U.S. circulating coins and ship them to the Federal Reserve for distribution to the nation’s banks.

Launched in 1999, the U.S. Mint’s 50 State Quarters Program is a 10-year initiative that honors each of the nation’s states in the order that they joined the Union. Each quarter is produced for about 10 weeks and will never be produced again. Surveys show that over 125 million adults are collecting the quarters.

New Quarters Available in Two-Roll Sets and Bags

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Mint announced today that quarters honoring Tennessee, the first coin in the 50 State Quarters® Program to be struck for the year 2002, will go on sale beginning January 22, 2001, at 12:00 noon (ET), and will be available for purchase the entire 10 week period. The Tennessee quarters are available in two-roll sets (40 coins per roll), including one Philadelphia and Denver Mint Mark coin roll each, and in bags of 100 and 1,000 coins. The Tennessee quarters are also available for the first time in the Mint’s Subscription Program.

Tennessee joined the Union on June 1, 1796, becoming the 16th state. Home to musical great Elvis Presley, the Grand Ole Opry and the Beale Street Historic District, Tennessee is rich in its musical contributions. In honor of this musical heritage, the new quarter’s design incorporates musical instruments and a musical score with the inscription “Musical Heritage.” The three stars represent Tennessee’s three regions and distinct musical styles from each. It is the first time that a fiddle, a trumpet, or a guitar has been represented on U.S. coinage.

Each coin roll is wrapped in a specially designed U.S. Mint paper coin wrap that prominently displays the 50 State Quarters Program logo, a “P” or “D” representing the roll’s mint of origin, “TN” designating the state of Tennessee and “$10” representing its dollar value.

Each bag is marked with the Mint of origin and the dollar value of its contents ($25 or $250). Two roll sets will sell for $32.00, bags of 100 coins for $35.50, and bags of 1,000 coins for $300. These rolls and bags, featuring quarters used in regular transactions and struck on our main production floors at the Philadelphia and Denver Mint facilities, will be shipped directly to you from the U.S. Mint.
