New Hampshire

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Mint today announced that a limited edition of 75,000 New Hampshire Official First Day Coin Covers will be available online at www.USMINT.gov. at noon Eastern Time on September 18. The First Day Coin Covers feature two New Hampshire quarters from the first day of mintage — July 31, 2000.

Priced at $19.95, the First Day Coin Cover includes quarters from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints on a handsome display card with the 33-cent Flag-Over-City postage stamp. The postmark of “August 7, 2000, Concord, New Hampshire” marks the day the New Hampshire quarters were first released to the Federal Reserve and the public - certifying this limited edition and honoring “The Granite State.”

The reverse design of the New Hampshire quarter depicts one of New Hampshire’s greatest natural attractions - “The Old Man of the Mountain” - opposite nine stars, signifying New Hampshire’s status as the ninth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution - and the state motto, “Live Free or Die.” The design was based on suggestions given to the New Hampshire Commemorative Quarter Committee, established by Governor Jeanne Shaheen to moderate a statewide design contest.

The New Hampshire quarters are the ninth coins of the 50 State Quarters™ Program that honors each of the 50 states in the order they entered the union. Five state designs will be issued each year through 2008 at approximately 10-week intervals.

Release of New Hampshire Quarters Signals the End of Production for South Carolina Quarters

CONCORD, NH — U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow today joined New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen and officials from the U.S. Mint at the New Hampshire State House to celebrate the launch of the newest coin in the 50 State Quarters™ Program honoring New Hampshire. The U.S. Mint began shipping the new New Hampshire quarters to Federal Reserve Banks today. U.S. citizens can expect to find the new quarters at commercial banks, financial institutions and in general circulation soon.

“With the release of a new quarter approximately every ten weeks, Americans of all ages have the opportunity to learn about the geography, history and culture of the United States,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, Treasurer of the United States. The New Hampshire quarter depicts one of New Hampshire’s greatest natural attractions–“The Old Man of the Mountain”- a rock formation found on Mt. Cannon in Franconia Notch. The new quarter features nine stars, signifying New Hampshire’s status as the ninth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The state motto, “Live Free or Die,” written by New Hampshire Revolutionary War hero, John Stark, also appears on the quarter. The design was based on suggestions given to the New Hampshire Commemorative Quarter Committee, established by Governor Shaheen to moderate a statewide design contest.

“The New Hampshire quarter is a fitting tribute to our state’s beauty and history. The Old Man of the Mountain is one of New Hampshire’s most recognized and beloved images. Our state motto, ‘Live Free or Die’ epitomizes our state’s proud tradition of freedom and independence,” Governor Shaheen said. “The New Hampshire quarter will give the rest of the nation a sense of New Hampshire’s natural beauty, its rich history and the character of our people.”

Legislation signed by President Clinton in 1997 authorized the Mint to honor the states in the order they entered the Union or ratified the Constitution by producing five quarters each year from 1999 through 2008 with reverse designs celebrating the heritage of each state. The design process for each quarter is determined within each state by the Governor before design concepts are sent to the Mint, and then returned to the states for final selection. Approval of the final design rests with the Treasury Secretary. The well-known “Eagle” reverse quarter is scheduled to resume production in 2008.

Collectors will have 72 hours to purchase two-roll sets and bags of the newest quarters

Washington, D.C. – The U.S. Mint announced today that New Hampshire state quarters will be sold online through its official catalog at www.USMINT.gov, from Monday, August 7, 2000 at 12:00 noon (EDT) through Thursday, August 10 at 12:00 Noon (EDT). The New Hampshire coins are the ninth in a series of new quarters released under the Mint’s 50 State Quarters™ Program, honoring each of the states.

To meet customer demand, the online sale will feature a new two-roll, 80 coin set of New Hampshire quarters, as well as bags of the new coins. The new two-roll set includes one roll of coins bearing the Philadelphia Mint mark (P), and an additional roll of quarters stamped with the Denver Mint mark (D). The set can be purchased for $32.00. Customers will also have the option of purchasing the New Hampshire quarter in bags of either 100 or 1000 coins.

Like its predecessors in the series, the New Hampshire quarter bears a unique design honoring the history of the state. Featuring “The Old Man and the Mountain,” the coin depicts one of New Hampshire’s greatest natural attractions–a rock formation found on Mt. Cannon in the Franconia Notch. The state’s motto “Live Free or Die,” and nine stars representing New Hampshire’s status as the ninth state in the Union to ratify the Constitution, completes the new quarter’s design.

“More than 110 million people nationwide have started to collect the new quarters, and we see that number rise each time a new coin is released,” said Jay W. Johnson, Director of the U.S. Mint. “We are confident that the unique design of the New Hampshire coin, coupled with its increased availability through the U.S. Mint web site will encourage even more Americans to take an interest in this successful and fun program.”

The quarters are manufactured at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, which produce all legal tender U.S. circulating coins, before being shipped to the Federal Reserve for distribution through the U.S. banking system. A new quarter is being released approximately every 10 weeks from 1999 through 2008, until every state in the Union has been honored. The Federal Reserve orders quarters to ensure an adequate supply to meet the needs of commerce as commercial banks demand.

Customers can purchase the New Hampshire quarters three ways: First, they can save shipping and handling charges by using the Mint’s secure web site www.USMINT.gov. Second, they can call 1-800-USA-MINT. Third, they may download an order form at the web site and fax it to (301) 344-4150.
