Limited Edition Set Features Rare Archival Records

Washington, D.C., June 5, 2001 – The United States Mint announced today it will begin selling its limited-edition of Formation of the Union Set beginning June 13 and online at www.usmint.gov on June 18 at 12:00 Noon (Eastern Time). Only 50,000 of The Formation of the Union Sets will be produced.

This is the third product produced under the “Coin & Chronicles” partnership between the United States Mint and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). Priced at $49.95, each set will contain the first thirteen quarters from the 50 State Quarters™ Program from both the Philadelphia and Denver mint facilities—26 in all—including all the difficult-to-find early quarters, as well as the latest issues.

As an exciting bonus, the set will include a special message from President George W. Bush, discussing the origin and the importance of the Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum, inscribed on all modern U.S. coinage. This is the first time in history a U.S. Mint product has included a message from the President of the United States.

“The history of our Nation is told through its coins, a concept that the 50 State Quarters™ Program has reinforced,” said David Pickens, Associate Director for Numismatics. “The Formation of the Union Set is a wonderful educational opportunity, and will delight both collectors and non-collectors.”

Incorporating photographs of many coins in circulation prior to the establishment of the U.S. Mint, plus fascinating images of rare historic archival records from NARA, The Formation of the Union Set tells the story of the pivotal years between 1774 and 1792, when 13 small separate colonies declared their independence from England, and joined a newly established Union.

Seventh Design in Popular 50 State Quarters™ Program Depicts Maryland State House

IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOR FURTHER INFORMATION:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Mint today announced that it has begun production of the seventh design in the 50 State Quarters series, and will begin shipping new Maryland quarters to Federal Reserve banks on March 13, 2000. The striking of Maryland quarters signals the end of production for Massachusetts quarters, as each design in the 50 State Quarters™ Program is produced for just 10 weeks.

“As the public looks forward to the new Maryland quarter, it is important to remember that there are now six ‘retired’ quarter designs,” said U.S. Mint Director Philip N. Diehl. “The quarter designs for Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut and Massachusetts are currently circulating in pocket change and available in collectors editions, but they are no longer being produced.”

The Maryland quarter features a reverse design depicting the Maryland State House dome in Annapolis. “As the oldest working state house in the country, our magnificent capitol building represents Maryland’s rich history and the unique role our State has played in American history,” said Governor Parris N. Glendening. “Among its many distinctions, the Maryland State House is the only state house in the country ever to have served as the nation’s capitol. The new quarter will be a lasting reminder of Maryland’s heritage and its place in American history.” On the quarter, the state house dome is surrounded by the nickname “The Old Line State” and balanced on both sides by oak leaf clusters.

Maryland quarters will begin appearing in circulation by late spring. Following the release of the Maryland quarter, state designs being produced in 2000 will honor South Carolina, New Hampshire and Virginia.

“Due to increased consumer demand for the 50 State Quarters Program coins, we will be striking more than one billion quarters to satisfy the 10-week period when Maryland is honored with a quarter design,” said Diehl. “This quantity represents more than a 50% increase over the number of quarters we produced for Delaware, the first design in the 50 State Quarters series.”

Legislation signed by the President in late 1997 authorized the Mint to honor the 50 states in the order they entered the Union or ratified the Constitution by producing five quarters each year from 1999 through 2008 with reverse designs celebrating the heritage of each state. The design process for each quarter is determined within each state by the Governor before design concepts are sent to the Mint, and then returned to the states for final selection. Approval of the final design rests with the Treasury Secretary. The well-known “Eagle” reverse quarter is scheduled to resume in 2009.

The 50 State Quarters Program coins are manufactured at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, which produce all legal tender U.S. circulating coins, before being shipped to the Federal Reserve for distribution through the banking system. The Federal Reserve orders new quarters to ensure an adequate supply to meet the needs of commerce as commercial banks demand.

Washington, D.C. - Customers may view an image of the limited edition of 75,000 Virginia Official First Day Coin Covers available for purchase online at www.USMINT.gov. The First Day Coin Covers feature two Virginia quarters from the first day of mintage — October 2, 2000.

Due to the timing of the striking of the Virginia quarters and their delivery to the Federal Reserve Bank, shipping of the Virginia Official First Day Coin Cover will begin on November 20, 2000.

Priced at $19.95, the First Day Coin Cover includes quarters from both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints on a handsome display card with the 33-cent Flag-Over-City postage stamp. The postmark of “October 16, 2000, Richmond, Virginia” marks the day the Virginia quarters were first released to the Federal Reserve and the public - certifying this limited edition and honoring “The Commonwealth of Virginia.”

The Virginia quarter design portrays the three the sailing ships - the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery - that brought the first permanent English settlers to Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. To mark the 400th anniversary that Jamestown will celebrate in 2007, the design includes the world “QUADRICENTENNIAL.” The design was created through a collaborative effort from the State Treasurer, Representatives from the Library of Virginia, the Department of Historic Resources, the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Department of General Services.

The Virginia quarters are the tenth coins of the 50 State Quarters™ Program that honors each of the 50 states in the order they entered the union. Five state designs will be issued each year through 2008 at approximately 10-week intervals.

Customers can purchase the Virginia quarters four ways: First, they can save shipping and handling charges by using the Mint’s secure web site www.USMINT.gov. Second, they can call 1-800-USA-MINT. JAMESTOWN, VA – Ten cannon shots were fired at the Jamestown Settlement this morning during a celebration led by Virginia Governor James Gilmore, First Lady Roxane Gilmore, U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow and U.S. Mint Director Jay W. Johnson. The cannon fire marked the launch of the Virginia state quarter – the tenth new coin minted under the U.S. Mint’s 50 State QuartersTM Program.

The event took place in front of replicas of the three ships portrayed on the new coin — the Susan Constant, the Godspeed and the Discovery – the sailing vessels that brought the first permanent English settlers to Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. During the ceremony, a 50 State Quarters Program sail was unfurled from the mast of the Discovery, as students from classrooms throughout the state received new Virginia quarters. The students were winners of a statewide quiz/contest sponsored by the Governor’s office.

According to U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow, the celebration at Jamestown brought the purpose of the 50 State Quarters Program to life. “The Virginia quarter depicts one of the most significant sites in state and national history. By launching this coin in Jamestown with Governor Gilmore and students from Virginia, we were able to engage a variety of citizens in a celebration of history and heritage,” she said.

In 2007, Jamestown, the first permanent settlement in the United States, will celebrate its 400th anniversary. To commemorate this event, the new quarter design includes the word, “QUADRICENTENNIAL.” The design was created through a collaborative effort from the State Treasurer, Representatives from the Library of Virginia, the Department of Historic Resources, the Virginia Tourism Corporation and the Department of General Services.

“These coins will circulate throughout the nation for years to come and will stand as a symbol to all Americans that the courage and perseverance of our forefathers began here in Jamestown,” Governor Gilmore said.

The release of the Virginia quarter marks the end of the distribution of the New Hampshire quarter. Each new quarter is minted for approximately ten weeks, after which its is no longer produced. The new quarters are manufactured at both the Philadelphia and Denver Mints, which produce all legal tender U.S. circulating coins, before being shipped to the Federal Reserve for distribution through the banking system. The Federal Reserve orders new quarters to ensure an adequate supply to meet the needs of commerce as commercial banks demand.

For further information on the 50 State Quarters™ Program and how to order and collect the new quarters, visit the Mint’s web site at www.usmint.gov or call 1-800-USA-MINT.

Release of New Hampshire Quarters Signals the End of Production for South Carolina Quarters

CONCORD, NH — U.S. Treasurer Mary Ellen Withrow today joined New Hampshire Governor Jeanne Shaheen and officials from the U.S. Mint at the New Hampshire State House to celebrate the launch of the newest coin in the 50 State Quarters™ Program honoring New Hampshire. The U.S. Mint began shipping the new New Hampshire quarters to Federal Reserve Banks today. U.S. citizens can expect to find the new quarters at commercial banks, financial institutions and in general circulation soon.

“With the release of a new quarter approximately every ten weeks, Americans of all ages have the opportunity to learn about the geography, history and culture of the United States,” said Mary Ellen Withrow, Treasurer of the United States. The New Hampshire quarter depicts one of New Hampshire’s greatest natural attractions–“The Old Man of the Mountain”- a rock formation found on Mt. Cannon in Franconia Notch. The new quarter features nine stars, signifying New Hampshire’s status as the ninth state to ratify the U.S. Constitution. The state motto, “Live Free or Die,” written by New Hampshire Revolutionary War hero, John Stark, also appears on the quarter. The design was based on suggestions given to the New Hampshire Commemorative Quarter Committee, established by Governor Shaheen to moderate a statewide design contest.

“The New Hampshire quarter is a fitting tribute to our state’s beauty and history. The Old Man of the Mountain is one of New Hampshire’s most recognized and beloved images. Our state motto, ‘Live Free or Die’ epitomizes our state’s proud tradition of freedom and independence,” Governor Shaheen said. “The New Hampshire quarter will give the rest of the nation a sense of New Hampshire’s natural beauty, its rich history and the character of our people.”

Legislation signed by President Clinton in 1997 authorized the Mint to honor the states in the order they entered the Union or ratified the Constitution by producing five quarters each year from 1999 through 2008 with reverse designs celebrating the heritage of each state. The design process for each quarter is determined within each state by the Governor before design concepts are sent to the Mint, and then returned to the states for final selection. Approval of the final design rests with the Treasury Secretary. The well-known “Eagle” reverse quarter is scheduled to resume production in 2008.
